Russian President Vladimir Putin's way to power for the next 15 years is clear.

Russian President Vladimir Putin's way to power for the next 15 years is clear. On Monday (April 5), he signed a bill giving him the right to stay in power till 2036.

According to the Moscow Times, this is Putin's second consecutive term as president and his fourth overall.

According to the constitution, he was to step down in 2024, but now with the amendment, he can remain in office for the next 15 years. Putin called for ballots from citizens last year. In it, the people had voted to allow him to stay in power for another two terms of 6 years. This was strongly opposed by Russia. Yet they claimed a big victory. The proposal was later approved by the Russian parliament.

According to media reports, after 2024, the term of the Russian president will be 6-6 years. If Putin wins both times, he will be Russia's president until 2036. If that happens, Putin will break the record for the longest tenure of Joseph Stalin and Peter. The bill, passed on Monday, gives Putin the right to run for office for the next 20 years.

The bill also allows former President Dmitry Medvedev to run in two more elections. Medvedev was Russia's president from 2008 to 2012.

Against this backdrop, opponents have criticized Putin. Opposition groups called for the PM to resign, saying he would not run for office until his death. Putin has been accused of poisoning opposition leader Alex Navalny and other opposition leaders.

Prior to signing the bill, Putin had said that his term until 2024 was sufficient. He had also said that no decision has been taken to contest elections after 2024.
